Glorious blue skies again today. The air was crisp and it mellowed out like red wine later in the day.
We donned our bike gear and rode out towards the red sand dune. The red sand dune was deceptively low from the Shearer's Quarters as from here we could get a wonderful view back out to the Shearer's Quarters and to the lunette. It was peaceful out here. Not a soul in sight. Again we were left with the thoughts in our heads.
The path rambled and roved through silver grey greenish landscape with birdsongs and rustling leaves of trees. I did not recall seeing this area twenty years ago. The ochre land, eucalypt green and blue skies were captivatingly serene to my mind and heart. A very special place.
Zanci shearing shed was very well presented with better interpretative boards compared to Mungo shearing shed. The floor plan had a more open feel and it was easier to navigate. The materials were mainly sourced locally from the land - cypress pine.
We went in a tour of the lunette with the local ranger. Luckily we booked quite early and managed to get a spot. We were very lucky to have been assigned Tanya Charles. She is a Muthi Muthi woman whose ancestors had lived on this land nearly fifty thousand years ago.
Her hair was very long and luscious. Her beautiful face was telling a story for her people - their persistence on this land; and the love of their people. She oozed wisdom and kindness; and above all she was determined to do what is right for her people.
Her voice was very calming. When she spoke, it was as if she was singing softly.
She was very engaging with her stories; and transferred her passion to our children.
They were asking lots of questions and were also searching for the artefacts too. There were many treasures yet to be discovered e.g. bones, shells, and stone tools.
These artefacts were mainly found in fires that were built many years ago.
At the end of the tour, Tanya spoke to us separately. She invited us to participate in the excavation they will be conducting in the near future. It is dependent on when they receive government funding. We were very thankful for such a wonderful opportunity.
Later on, we learnt more about Tanya (https://vimeo.com/34604335/description). She is an amazing and strong woman. We are very lucky.
