KJ organised the trout fishing at Australian Rainbow Trout Farm a little while ago. We
started early and the car meandered past horses and cows in the fields in the
hills.
My brother, sister, nephew and his grandmother met us at the
Australian Rainbow Trout Farm. Upon payment, we were given green paper wrist
bands. The entry fee included the rod, bait, unhooking and killing service, and
cleaning of the fish. The one and only rule was any fish that was caught, we
were not allowed to throw back in.
As soon as the line was cast, you were guaranteed a fish! Raidyn
landed the first fish. It was all so
very exciting. There were lots of screaming and laughing. I think the biggest education for the kids today wasn’t about landing their first fish but it was to bear witness to the guy who
marched over with a pair of long-nosed pliers who unhooked and bashed the fish
head with it! Twack! Twack! Still alive? Twack! Twack! Twack!
As the process was so efficiently successful, we tried
slowing it down by going over to the pond filled with elusive fish to try our
patience. We quickly found out that we were not very patient at all and returned to the original ponds!
We caught rainbow trout, golden trout and atlantic salmon. At
the paying station, they were twacked again for good measure, weighed and
cleaned.
We returned to my sister’s house and baked the catch. It was
indeed a fresh fishy feast.
