Our first family trip to South Melbourne Markets couldn’t be
any better.
The sun was shining on a deep blue clear canvas. The air was
cool, crisp and calm…again!
The boys were already riding earlier that morning and we met
up at Burnley Boulders. Wall 1’s configuration had been upgraded to suit for
long limbed souls.
We rode on the cycle path parallel with St Kilda Road. It
felt quite safe in the first instance with an island separating the road from
the cycle lane. But when the separation was just a paint line on the bitumen,
it was a little stressful.
We rode past the sculptural Australian Centre for Contemporary
Arts building, by Wood Marsh Architects. It seemed to hover on an imagined moonscape.
The experience on Moray Street (https://metrotunnel.vic.gov.au/disruptions/network-improvements/moray-street)
with the special crossing was fun for the children. This is part of the Metro
Tunnel upgrade. What a feat for cyclists!
Once we arrived to our destination, we bee-lined for Agathe
(https://shop.agathe.com.au/). The produce selection was minimal as most of
yummy breads and pastries were already sold earlier that morning. Like whales
hunting anchovies, we devoured the most delicious croissants, chocolate croissant,
rhubarb turnover and last pandan flan. The pandan flan was the best.
We explored the market and found dinner for the night –
fresh pasta! We also discovered the truffle and cheese as well as pie store,
Small Town Pie Co.
Skinners Adventure Playground (http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/adventure-playground-sth-melb.htm)
was exactly like we remembered with in-ground trampoline, giant slides,
basketball hoops, and maze.
For the ride home, we found the path adjacent Melbourne Botanical
Gardens. We found this way was much quicker especially when we were flying
downhill.
The boys rode ahead of us as they were much faster. Ella Mae
and I took our time. She was exhausted by the time we arrived home. She was
very pleased as it was a new personal best for her, 42km.
