We woke up to a fresh sunny morning. We packed the car and away we went. It was a challenge to get across town and out of Melbourne. As always, the traffic seemed to vanish at an invisible movable border, as if the vehicles went off into a different world.
Castlemaine is a pretty little town with buildings of the goldrush era. The town is synonymous for its rail trail, and creatives. We stumbled on Stoneman's New Bookroom. The bell jingled and tinkled as we entered this beautiful space that smelt so familiar and homely. We were greeted with a smile; and the children disappeared between the shelves and leaves of books.
The old Market Building was filled with art; and the permanent exhibition Boorp Boorp Boondyil (Passing Knowledge to Our Children). We learnt the Dja Dja Wurrung's people's culture, and language with connections to nature.
In Nullawill, we were graced by amazing silo art, farmer and his kelpie by Smug. This was painted in 2019. My other favourite silo art was found in Sea Lake with a girl swinging by eucalyptus tree called 'The Space In Between'. It was painted by Travis Vinson and Joel Fergie in 2019.
Merbein was blanketed with vineyards; and was relatively barren from trees like a scored Christmas ham pinned sparsely with cloves. As we approached our accommodation, the avenue of palm trees waved hello. These are heritage listed as significant. The trees were planted by early settlers. They are approximately 70-90 years old.
