Flinders Ranges :: Day 8 :: Wilpena Pound Wilcolo Track Mawson Trail

It was difficult to wake up the children. They were super tired. We washed up and drove straight to Wilpena Pound to have breakfast there. We sat by the tables and chairs that were sunlit and ate cereal with soy milk. They were extremely happy that morning. Ella Mae recalled us taking a photograph of them in the slots that were in the rammed earth wall. We took another to show that they still fitted inside the slots!

The toilets here were really bad. It was a shame as it was in that state already in the morning. I feared its later state.

We rode through Wilpena Pound campground. It seemed quite crowded here compared to Rawnsley Park Station. The other end of Wilcolo Track started near the kitchen area. There were kangaroos grazing here as it was quite early in the day.

This part of the track was a little more challenging than yesterday’s. There was a part where rabbits had made their homes within the roots under the cypress tree groves. Water left their trail on the soft ground.

I love this part of the ride. We had many different challenges all the time. Most of them were achievable for the children. Ella Mae was exceptionally proud of herself when she conquered them.

The hardest part was probably whereby we had to carry our bikes down the dry river bed. There were two remnants of sheep troughs here. If only the red gums could tell us the stories of many adventures they had experienced.

The landscape here changed at every turn. Each and every one of them was breathtaking. The view of the Pound is deep russet and orange with thin sharp rocks protruding out like dragon scales. The purple shale with lack of vegetation was what I thought a moonscape would appear.

On our return journey, Thomas spotted an echidna in the middle of the path. Luckily we were not riding fast. We admired the young echidna for little while. It was so scared that it buried its head in the ground and stayed very still.

At the entrance of the campsite, there was a speed hump we have to go over. Every day, we would go over it without any problems. That day, we went over with a clunk! Our bike rack had dropped significantly and we had not noticed as it was happening gradually.

We inspected the bike rack but didn’t comprehend how it was so low.

We had dinner at the Woolshed Restaurant. The service was very poor as they didn’t have enough staff on the floor. The food was mediocre too as they also had ran out of food due to late delivery from the truck. It was really bad news for a restaurant. It definitely wasn’t country sized serve.

It was quite late by the time we returned from the restaurant. We played table tennis with the children as we promised. It was quite fun.

That evening, it was much colder and windier. Kim and I slept really badly as we were both worried about it. We didn’t let each other know our worries for fear of worrying the other.
