Warneet Natural Features Reserve

A little outing for our little family last Sunday. As we didn't know what to expect for the day, we packed for "just-in-case": towels, change of clothes, boots, buckets and spades, water, hats, rain jackets.

We walked for about 5 kms in total. The children were happy as they didn't walk too much to get to an unlimited supply of sand and mud. The air was fresh. My perception of mangroves was it to be sea scented or perhaps even damp socks. It was pleasant surprise. The twittering of the birds tickled the cooling breeze.

There were so many colours in the sand: red, yellow, white, black and brown. Ella Mae tried to count how many different colours there were in her sandcastle. Thomas was contented to make mud pies. He contemplated to take some to share with his friends. After much discouragement and explanation from us, he decided to leave clay behind for the animals.

The walk, although quite short, was rewarded with flora gems. My mood soared when I saw one pink five fingers orchid. I stayed with it for a little while to absorb this little beauty. A few meters further, the happy feeling was multi-fold as almost of bouquet of these orchids scattered all around us. Another discovered gem was the scented sundew. We didn't stay long enough to watch an insect trapped or devoured. I was satisfied nevertheless.

I am glad we packed more than we needed as it did rain and the kids did end up changing their clothes and shoes. I think to maximise our enjoyment of this place, it has to be a little windy and cool. My blood was like a magnet to these massive mosquitoes....and no...we didn't pack insect repellent! If we stayed any longer, I would've resembled a biltong.
